From 1940-1956 the Soviet Union connected Eastern Siberia and Mongolia by the railroad (2500km/1,500mi). This was done to ensure a steady connection between USSR and its ideological ally Mongolia. Although the ideology was not the only reason for connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway to Mongolia. Rich deposits of color metals discovered in Mongolia became vital to the final decision. The railroad runs from the Lake Baikal area directly south to Ulaanbaator and Beijing. Today it remains a major transport artery for Mongolia's economy, while for travelers it is more known as the shortcut between Mongolia, China, and Russian Eastern Siberia. In fact, often it is referred as the Trans-Mongolian Railroad. Most of the route lies in endless Mongolian steppes and the Gobi desert in the south. There is not really much to see along the way, but barely populated lands with random tiny towns and settlements. The Train Time Table for Trains between Russia and MongoliaPrices in Euro
